What it genuinely does differently
It comes in three sizes. Almost every other chair is manufactured in one frame size and adjusts around it. The Aeron changes the frame dimensions themselves. If you are notably small or large, that is not a refinement — it is the difference between a chair that fits and one that does not.
The seat cannot compress. This is the substantive durability argument. A foam seat takes a permanent set over years of use, and once it has, the support geometry is gone and cannot be restored. A tensioned suspension surface does not have that failure mode.
The warranty is twelve years and covers the parts that fail. Manufacturers do not offer that lightly.
Who should buy something else
If you work somewhere cold, mesh offers no insulation and you will feel it. If you like a soft seat, you will not learn to like this one — it is firm by design and no adjustment changes that. And if the chair sits in a living room, its aesthetics are unapologetically industrial.

Why does the seat feel hard?
Because it is a suspension surface, not a cushion. The mesh is tensioned to distribute your weight across the whole seat rather than compressing under the points that press hardest.
