Read the leg stages first
Each leg telescopes in either two or three segments. Three-stage legs travel further at both ends, move faster, and are generally steadier at full height because the segments overlap more.
The practical consequence of travel range: two-stage desks often cannot go low enough for shorter users to sit correctly, and cannot go high enough for taller users to stand correctly. Check the published minimum and maximum against your own measurements before anything else.
Stability is assembly as much as engineering
Every sit-stand desk moves somewhat at standing height. What you are trying to avoid is movement that shakes your monitor while you type.
The specification that predicts service life
The motor and the warranty on it. A frame is steel and will outlive you; the motors and the controller are what fail. A warranty that covers the frame for ten years but the motor for two is telling you something specific about the motor.
Presets are not a luxury
The failure mode of standing desks is not that they break. It is that people stop using the standing part. Anything that reduces the friction of changing height — a one-press preset rather than holding a button — measurably increases how often people actually do it.

Questions people ask
What does two-stage versus three-stage actually mean?
It is the number of telescoping segments in each leg. Two-stage legs have two, three-stage have three. More segments means more total travel — so the desk goes both lower and higher — and faster movement, because each segment travels a shorter distance simultaneously. Three-stage legs are also usually more stable at full height because the overlap between segments is greater.
How much wobble is normal at standing height?
Some lateral movement is unavoidable on any sit-stand desk: it is a tall structure on four contact points. What you should not accept is wobble that makes a monitor visibly shake when you type. Stability depends more on frame quality, foot depth and how tight the assembly bolts are than on price, and a properly tightened cheap frame often beats a loosely assembled expensive one.
Do I need a desk with memory presets?
They matter more than they sound like they should. The practical barrier to using a sit-stand desk is friction: if changing height means holding a button and eyeballing the position, you will do it less. A preset button that takes you to your exact standing height in one press removes that friction, and people with presets demonstrably change position more often.
