The verdict

Our Pick Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro Beyerdynamic · $$ · 8.8/10

Comfortable, isolating, endlessly repairable, and brighter than some people will like.

These turn up in more home recording setups than anything else in their price range, and the reasons are comfort and repairability rather than sound.

Why they are everywhere

Comfort over hours. The velour pads are soft, breathable and large enough to sit around most ears rather than on them. Clamping force is moderate. Four-hour sessions are genuinely unremarkable in the DT 770 Pro (at Amazon, opens in a new tab), which is not true of most closed headphones, and it is why they lead our list of headphones for streaming.

Parts. Pads, headband padding and drivers are all sold separately. The normal reasons headphones get replaced are, here, a small order and ten minutes.

Isolation that does the job. Enough that a microphone a hand span from your face will not hear what you are monitoring.

The honest complaint

The treble is lifted, noticeably. While recording this is arguably a feature — it makes sibilance and background noise obvious while you can still fix them. Over a long casual listening session, some people find it tiring.

If you know that bright treble bothers you, this is the specific reason to look at something more even instead.

How we assessed this

We have not measured these or listened to them on a controlled system. This assessment rests on published impedance variants and driver specifications, on the enclosure and pad design, and on documented spare parts availability. It is a judgement about suitability rather than a listening test.

Questions people ask

Which impedance version should I buy?

The low-impedance version if you will ever plug into a laptop, a phone or a camera, because it runs properly from any of those. The high-impedance version if it will live permanently on an audio interface or a headphone amplifier, where it is the better-behaved option. The mid version is a compromise that suits interfaces and struggles on weaker outputs. Buying the high-impedance version and then discovering you have nothing to drive it is the classic mistake here.

Is the treble really that bright?

There is a clear lift in the upper range, and reactions to it split sharply. For recording it is arguably useful, because it makes sibilance, mouth noise and background hiss obvious while you can still do something about them. For long casual listening some people find it fatiguing and others never notice. If you know you are treble-sensitive, this is the specific characteristic to weigh, and a pair with a more even response will suit you better.

How long do they last?

A very long time, because Beyerdynamic sells the parts that wear. Pads, headband padding and the driver assemblies are all available separately, which means the usual reasons a pair gets thrown away are repairs costing a fraction of a replacement. The one genuine weakness is the fixed cable: it cannot be swapped when it eventually fails, so a cable failure means a soldering job or a service visit rather than plugging in a new lead.
